De Ati Radeon X550 is een extra budget uitvoering van de entry level X-series en het model is 12 maanden later uitgebracht dan de Radeon X300 (SE) X600 (SE) / Second edition modellen samen met de X700 series. De aangpaste RV370 110 nanaometer GPU is daarbij aangepast met een standaard snellere processor en sneller geheugen waardoor de rendering standaard hoger is dan de Second Edition modellen. Daarnaast is ook de Sapphire ATI Radeon X550 voorzien van de Hypermemory versie is krachtiger dan men zou verwachten en is dan ook ideaal voor een ouder goed werkend budgetsysteem. Met het gebruik van Hypermemory techniek wordt naast het eigen dedicated / local videogeheugen er ook ongebruikt systeemgeheugen gebruikt voor 3D toepassingen indien nodig. Met deze techniek kan de Radeon X550 Hypermemory beschikken over maximaal 256MB DDR geheugen.
Deze Sapphire ATI Radeon X550 videokaart is vooral een goed alternatief voor het upgraden van een onboard grafische adapters en is dan ook ideaal voor een ouder budgetsysteem of een ouder systeem dat door beperkte bronnen prestaties tekort komt. Een Autonome videokaart uit dezelfde periode is altijd een beter alternatief dan een onboard VGA adapter gezien deze resources zoals werkgeheugen,,onboard chipsets en de onboard GPU belasten met grafische taken. Speciaal ontwikkeld voor PCI Express moederborden en voor de steeds grotere vraag aan grafische capaciteiten zoals recentere besturingsystemen sinds Windows Vista zijn de Radeon X-series destijds geintroduceerd als opvolger voor de AGP grafische kaarten en met name de Radeon 9000 series. De PCI-Express bus is een kaart interface die 2 x zo snel is dan een AGP bus vandaar dat men vooral in de tweede generatie Pentium 4 gebasseerde systemen een PCI-Express x16 lanes interface is verwerkt. De Radeon X550 series is ontwikkeld voor onder andere Microsoft Windows Vista, omdat hier grote grafische verbeteringen in de grafische interface (GUI) zoals, Windows Aero zijn doorgevoerd.Deze grafische interfaces zijn ook in Windows 7 en Windows 8 doorontwikkeld en vragen veel van de grafische systeembronnen van de computer en dus ook meer van de videokaart vandaar de X-series destijds is ontwikkeld om meer met minder te kunnen realiseren. De Radeon X300 SE is dan ook een perfecte editie die tenminste tot Windows 8.1 compatibel is zonder problemen. Dit Windows 8.1 besturingsysteem herkent de grafische kaart en installeert de juiste WDDM 1.0 drivers voor X300/ X550 /X1050 series en men kan direct aan de slag. De Radeon X550 voldoet ook aan de minimale eisen grafische eisen voor Windows 10, echter dit DX12 besturingsysteem is complexer ook met betrekking qua installatie en daarom adviseer ik de Radeon X550 voor Vista, Windows 7 en Windows 8.1
Het is zeker geen specifieke gamers kaart maar dankzij 4 pixel pipes, 2 geometrie pipes, voldoende DDR geheugen, een 64-bit geheugenbus en de support van DirectX 9.0 B en Shader Model 2.0 B is er in de retro klasse nog voldoende ruimte is voor retro entry level games zoals Call of Duty 1 , Battlefield 2 (2005), Doom3 (2004), GTA San A,Criminial Origins, Far Cry 2004, The Sims 3.
n.b. De processor van de X-series RV370 heeft zeer veel ruimte om doormiddel van software settings de frequentie nog zeer ver op te voeren, hetzelfde geldt voor het geheugen.
De Sapphire ATI Radeon X550 is voorzie van de Ati Videoshader voor allround internet media / online / offline mediabestanden, Het ondersteund ATI Fullstream single videostreaming : Real, DivX, WMV9 format en decoding / encoding acceleratie van MPEG1, MPEG2 MPEG4 mediabestanden en DirectX Video Acceleration DXVA.

Once video content has been compressed into MPEG-2 format, a significant amount of effort must now go into decoding or uncompressing the video so that it may be shown on a user's display. The following steps are required to decode and display the video content:
Inverse discrete cosine transform (IDCT):
During encoding, a mathematical function called a discrete cosine transform (DCT) is applied to all of the video content, which makes it much easier to compress (to be more exact throw out pieces of information that are not important to the visual quality of the video). The DCT transforms are actually done on blocks of pixels 8x8 in size. Once the video data has been transformed a further level of encoding called run-level encoding is performed, which removes redundant information from the video data.
The Inverse discrete cosine transform (IDCT) engine found in all RADEON graphics cards reverses this entire process during MPEG-2 decoding, decompressing the image on a block-by-block basis.
Motion Compensation:
Once IDCT completes the decompression of the rawvideo data, motion compensation is then performed to generate the final fully decoded video images. Motion compensation uses a concept known as predictivecoding, which is widely used in video compression. Typically, only a fraction of an image changes from frame-to-frame, which makes it quite easy to predict future frames from previous frames. Motion compensation is used as part of this predictive process. If an image sequence includes moving objects, then their motion within the scene can be measured, and this information may be used to predict the content offrames in the sequence. Without proper motion compensation hardware support, you are likely to see video artifacts, or banding in areas of gradually changing color. All RADEON hardware provides full support for hardware motion compensation.
FULLSTREAM support for streaming video content:
Unfortunately when streaming video content (from sources such as the internet) there can be issues with maintaining video quality due to limited bandwidth, resulting in poor visual quality. FULLSTREAM a technology developed by ATI significantly improves visual quality for cases when bandwidth is limited. Without sufficient bandwidth pixilation and large blocky artifacts can be seen during video playback as a result of the reduction in video data being streamed. FULLSTREAM works by intelligently detecting the edges of these visible artifact blocks and smoothes them over using an advanced filtering technique using the hardware available on RADEON DirectX 9 parts.
FULLSTREAM operates first by analyzing the frame of the video and determines which blocks of the frame are corrupt. Once such artifacts are detected FULLSTREAM examines the corrupted pixels and adjusts their color values accordingly. As a result the FULLSTREAM video will be greatly improved.
De-interlacing:
As previously mentioned the majority of video source data is recorded and stored in interlaced format. This format is used for historical reasons and was originated to maximize the efficiency of transmitting data. Interlaced content is actually broken down into fields(even and odd fields, when combined give one frame).
Most PC monitors use progressive scanning, which as previously mentioned means that they render all lines in a single top-to-bottom pass and require twice as much detail as interlaced scanning. The end result is that video data must be converted from interlaced fieldsto progressive frames to be rendered on a PC. This process is called de-interlacing.

Once video content has been compressed into MPEG-2 format, a significant amount of effort must now go into decoding or uncompressing the video so that it may be shown on a user's display. The following steps are required to decode and display the video content:
Inverse discrete cosine transform (IDCT):
During encoding, a mathematical function called a discrete cosine transform (DCT) is applied to all of the video content, which makes it much easier to compress (to be more exact throw out pieces of information that are not important to the visual quality of the video). The DCT transforms are actually done on blocks of pixels 8x8 in size. Once the video data has been transformed a further level of encoding called run-level encoding is performed, which removes redundant information from the video data.
The Inverse discrete cosine transform (IDCT) engine found in all RADEON graphics cards reverses this entire process during MPEG-2 decoding, decompressing the image on a block-by-block basis.
Motion Compensation:
Once IDCT completes the decompression of the rawvideo data, motion compensation is then performed to generate the final fully decoded video images. Motion compensation uses a concept known as predictivecoding, which is widely used in video compression. Typically, only a fraction of an image changes from frame-to-frame, which makes it quite easy to predict future frames from previous frames. Motion compensation is used as part of this predictive process. If an image sequence includes moving objects, then their motion within the scene can be measured, and this information may be used to predict the content offrames in the sequence. Without proper motion compensation hardware support, you are likely to see video artifacts, or banding in areas of gradually changing color. All RADEON hardware provides full support for hardware motion compensation.
FULLSTREAM support for streaming video content:
Unfortunately when streaming video content (from sources such as the internet) there can be issues with maintaining video quality due to limited bandwidth, resulting in poor visual quality. FULLSTREAM a technology developed by ATI significantly improves visual quality for cases when bandwidth is limited. Without sufficient bandwidth pixilation and large blocky artifacts can be seen during video playback as a result of the reduction in video data being streamed. FULLSTREAM works by intelligently detecting the edges of these visible artifact blocks and smoothes them over using an advanced filtering technique using the hardware available on RADEON DirectX 9 parts.
FULLSTREAM operates first by analyzing the frame of the video and determines which blocks of the frame are corrupt. Once such artifacts are detected FULLSTREAM examines the corrupted pixels and adjusts their color values accordingly. As a result the FULLSTREAM video will be greatly improved.
De-interlacing:
As previously mentioned the majority of video source data is recorded and stored in interlaced format. This format is used for historical reasons and was originated to maximize the efficiency of transmitting data. Interlaced content is actually broken down into fields(even and odd fields, when combined give one frame).
Most PC monitors use progressive scanning, which as previously mentioned means that they render all lines in a single top-to-bottom pass and require twice as much detail as interlaced scanning. The end result is that video data must be converted from interlaced fieldsto progressive frames to be rendered on a PC. This process is called de-interlacing.
